Cohen & Steers Capital Management is a private investment manager that operates as a subsidiary of Cohen & Steers Inc. It can trace its history back to 1986, when the founders Martin Cohen and Robert Steers founded its parent company Cohen & Steers. The company shares its executive board with the parent company with the original founder Robert Steers acting as the CEO and Martin Cohen acting as the Executive Chairman with both of them taking the role of portfolio management. The firm largely focuses on providing to investment companies although it also offers its services to high net worth individuals, charities, other pooled investment vehicles, pension and profit sharing plans, corporations, and state and municipal government entities. The company launches and manages equity, fixed income, balanced mutual funds, and hedge funds, investing its assets in public equity, fixed income, commodity, derivatives, global real estate securities, utilities, value equities, and a variety of other high dividend paying common stocks. The company conducts its research in house and employs fundamental research with a stock picking approach in order to make decisions for its portfolios. With its headquarters in New York City and additional offices in Seattle, London, Hong Kong, and Brussels, Cohen & Steers Capital Management maintains an international presence. The company currently has a total of approximately $53 billion in total assets under management that is split across 125 accounts averaging $25 million each. Cohen & Steers Capital Management employs 264 people including over 100 broker dealer registered representatives. While its number of accounts has stayed relatively stable in recent years, its total assets under management has increased from its $15 billion amount five years prior to over three times that amount today.
