Hi Guys,
some of you probably know Phil Town,
the one who was very right when called Top and Bottom in recent years.
Mr. Town is value oriented investor,
as described in his books and blog.
Following him can be interesting and valuable for most people on this site.

Best,
Ariel

Cabiri.

I agree with you that Phil is widely known in Investing circles. However, you will learn much more if you understand what he does and why instead of just following him.

He is a Rule #1 Investor not a value investor as he intimately describes in his books and in general conversation.

The difference being value investors look for companies that are trading at less than their intrinsic value.Rule #1 investing takes this a giant step farther. By definition, Rule#1 investing means, "Don't lose money."

There are many firms that trade less than their intrinsic value, Rule #1 ers or RULERS as some of us prefer to be called.. Seek to identify the intrinsic value of a wonderful Biz. Develop a deep understanding of this Biz. Determine how much they are willing to buy the entire Biz (not trade it) for. Lastly, they do all this knowing that owning this Biz will get them a MARR (Minimum Acceptable Rate of Return) of 15%/yr or more.

Of course, they do this by strictly following their RULER ritual:

Rationale- our story shows us why fear is irrational and why others who doubt us are wrong
Understand-our story understands our 4 M's (Meaning, Moat, Management, Margin of Safety)
Leverage-our story leverages our ROI & lower our risk
Event-our story includes the event that created the irrational fear
Reduce-our story explains what to expect by reducing our adjusted cost basis in 5-10 yrs
Story-our story is the story

Enjoy

D

It's hard to believe Sonkin is not already followed.

I agree with Bradlewski about his description of the Rule 1 strategy. However, I don't see why he should be excluded from this list considering he shares the same principles as most of the Guru's on this site. He even promotes Gurufocus as one of the most valuable tools to use to his students and he doesn't even profit on it..
