The Best-Yielding Ex-Dividend Stocks on Jan. 31, 2013

Buying stocks before the ex-dividend date is simple. If you buy a stock before the ex-dividend date and hold it, you will receive the next dividend. Buying high yielding stocks is not a one-way strategy to high returns.

In addition to high returns, the valuation should be fair. This is the main reason why I screen every day tomorrow’s best ex-dividend stocks by yield and market capitalization.

A full list of all stocks with payment dates can be found here: Ex-Dividend Stocks January 31, 2013. In total, four stocks and preferred shares go ex dividend, of which two yield more than 3%. The average yield amounts to 4.25%.

The ex-dividend date is a major date related to the payment of dividends. If you purchase a stock on its ex-dividend date or later, you will not receive the next dividend payment. Instead, the seller gets the dividend. If you purchase before the ex-dividend date, you get the dividend. It is important that your broker settles your trade before the ex-dividend date.

The Calumet Specialty Products Partners LP stock has a current operating margin of 5.51% and the debt to equity ratio amounts to 1.02. Earnings per share are expected to grow by 7.23% for the next year and 15.70% for the upcoming five years.

These are the market ratios of the company: P/E Ratio: 10.06, Forward P/E Ratio: 8.95, P/S Ratio: 0.48, P/B Ratio: 2.25, Dividend Yield: 7.83%.

Southern Company (SO) has a market capitalization of $39 billion and operates within the electric utilities industry.

The Southern Company stock has a current operating margin of 25.64% and the debt to equity ratio amounts to 1.10. Earnings per share are expected to grow by 6.11% for the next year and 5.07% for the upcoming five years.

Citigroup (C) has a market capitalization of $127.7 billion and operates within the money center banks industry.

The Citigroup Inc. stock has a current operating margin of 11.31% and the debt to equity ratio amounts to 2.66. Earnings per share are expected to grow by 12.83% for the next year and 11.65% for the upcoming five years.
