Buying stocks before the ex-dividend date is simple. If you buy a stock before the ex-dividend date and hold it, you will receive the next dividend. Buying high-yielding stocks is not a one-way strategy to high returns.

In addition to high returns, the valuation should be fair. This is the main reason why I screen every day tomorrow’s best ex-dividend stocks by yield and market capitalization.

A full list of all stocks with payment dates can be found here: Ex-Dividend Stocks March 8, 2013. In total, five stocks and preferred shares go ex dividend, of which none yield more than 3%. The average yield amounts to 2.15%.

The ex-dividend date is a major date related to the payment of dividends. If you purchase a stock on its ex-dividend date or later, you will not receive the next dividend payment. Instead, the seller gets the dividend. If you purchase before the ex-dividend date, you get the dividend. It is important that your broker settles your trade before the ex-dividend date.

has a market capitalization of $245.47 Billion and operates within the Discount, Variety Stores industry.

The Wal-Mart Stores Inc. stock has a current operating margin of 5.93% and the debt to equity ratio amounts to 0.71. Earnings per share are expected to grow by 10.11% for the next year and 8.88% for the upcoming five years.

These are the market ratios of the company: P/E Ratio: 14.62, Forward P/E Ratio: 12.48, P/S Ratio: 0.52, P/B Ratio: 3.29, Dividend Yield: 2.56%.

Ingersoll-Rand (IR) has a market capitalization of $15.84 Billion and operates within the Diversified Machinery industry.

The Ingersoll-Rand Plc stock has a current operating margin of 10.72% and the debt to equity ratio amounts to 0.45. Earnings per share are expected to grow by 13.30% for the next year and 10.93% for the upcoming five years.
