The reason so much short interest is that Sanderson Farms has enjoyed record profits due to chicken prices being at a all-time high and corn and soy feed being very low & those trends will probably not hold up over the next 6-12 months. Also, many foreign exports of chicken have been banned by some countries for fear of avian influenza which has reduced their rev growth.

Volatility of operating margin may be the answer. Stock cleared all my screens except that one.

Any thoughts on why this stock draws so much short interest? I see earnings volatility due to commodity exposure in the chicken feed, but otherwise I see: conservative balance sheet, solid capital allocation by management, and tailwinds from health trends as people eat less beef and more white meat. Are the bears just waiting for the next drought?
