K12 Inc - Technology-Based Education Company With Potential Investment Lessons

September 20, 2010 | About:
Video Summary

K12 Inc is a technology-based educational company. It offers curriculum and educational services to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. It mainly provides products and services to virtual public schools even though parents and traditional schools can purchase them.

The company’s products include online lessons, offline learning kits, and lesson guides. In addition to these products, it provides an online school platform, school management systems and school community tools to deliver online lessons, track student progress and performance, enroll students, assign grades and allow them to interact through discussion boards, blogs and private messaging. Their services include school management services, academic support services, and student support services.

The company was founded in 2000 with the goal of providing children access to high-quality education regardless of their geographic or socioeconomic background. At first, the curriculum served 900 students in two states. By 2009, it was serving schools in 23 states and the District of Columbia.

  • Just like traditional schools, virtual public schools are financed with government funding which can be reduced.
  • Virtual public schools are new and bad apples can tarnish their image for everyone.
  • The company’s two largest clients constitute 28 percent of revenue.

It does not appear the company has any moat but certain metrics are improving, and there is a possibility for one in the future.

A Screener Endorsed by Warren Buffett without Knowing

In a recent interview Warren Buffett mentioned three companies that he finds attractive. Out of the three companies he mentioned, two of them are listed in GuruFocus’ Buffett-Munger screener. Buffett-Munger Screener looks for high quality companies that are traded at fair prices, the kind of companies that Buffett buys and hold forever. The Model Portfolio of Buffett-Munger Screener has outperformed the market year-over-year. It is just one of the features provided with GuruFocus Premium Membership.
