Irene and Retailers

Hurrican Irene is scaring U.S. citizens, especially New Yorkers. This may or may not be another “Storm of the Century;” we do not know. But everybody would remember the “past friends” Gloria (’85 with $1 billion damage), Hugo (’89, around $7 billion damage), Andrew (’92, $30 billion damage) and the most recent is Katrina in 2005 with the biggest estimated damage (up to $200 billion)

Most of the consumers are flocking to Home Depot (HD, Financial) and Lowe’s (LOW, Financial) to stockpile batteries, flashlights, generators and plywood to prepare for the hurricane. Those two retailers have been quite helpful by having in their websites the preparation and clean-up guide as for Lowe’s and the checklist offered in Home Depot website. Both of these retailers are getting more products from their warehouses to satisfy the spike in demand as the predicted path of Irene is getting through one-fifth of the two home improvement retailers.

After the emergency supplies have been bought, what would be the next thing that consumers would think about? Of course it will be food supplies, pharmacies, gas. And the first retailer for those products that comes across their minds may be Walmart (WMT, Financial), the low-cost provider for all those necessities.

Anyway, hopefully the storm will soon disappear, it would hurt no one and will result in minimal monetary losses.
