What a Year for Hedge Funds!

The majority of hedge funds had a tough year in 2011, according to the latest HSBC Hedge Fund Performance Report. On average, Equity-Diversified Long Short Asia Fund lost 9.89%; Emerging market fund lost 13.5%; European funds lost 5.67%; Japan Fund lost 8.88%. US Funds did the best, still lost 2.43%.

John Paulson’s Advantage Plus fund lost 47.77% as of Nov. 30, 2011, ranked at the very bottom of all funds covered. His two other funds: Paulson Advantage Fund and Paulson Recovery Fund are also among the 20 worst performing funds.

David Einhorn’s Greenlight Capital Offshore Fund gained 3.93% as of Oct. 31 for 2011. This fund has averaged 18.22% since incepted in 1996.

Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square lost 5.56% in 2011 as Dec. 15, 2011. It averaged 16.65% a year since 2005.

Richard Perry’s Perry Partners lost 7.79% for 2011. It averaged 11.49% a year since 2003.

The better performers:

Viking Global gained 7.8% for 2011 as of Nov. 30. The fund has gained 18.9% since 1999.

Dan Loeb’s Third Point did the best among all. His two funds gained 37.9% and 35.91% for 2011! These funds have averaged 17.36% and 23.02% annually since incepted in 1996 and 1997.
