Brookdale Senior Living Inc. (BKD): Co-CEO W. E. Sheriff Bought 76,400 Shares; Director Jeffrey G. Edwards Bought 1,250,000 Shares

Brookdale Senior Living, Inc. (BKD), which owns and operates living facilities and retirement care communities for senior citizens, reported a bigger third quarter loss of $0.58 or $58.9 million, compared to a loss of $0.34 or $31.1 million from the previous year. Although same-store revenues are up by 6.3% and total revenue has increased from $387.04 million to $464.59 million, the gain was not enough to offset the higher quarterly operating expense of $476.67.

Foot Locker, Inc. (FL), an athletic footwear and apparel retailer, reported a third quarter loss of $0.22 or $33 million compared to $0.42, or $65 from a previous year. Due to poor sales, the company’s revenue dropped from $1.43 to $1.36 billion. In 2008, Foot Locker anticipates the closing of 300 more stores, which are 50 stores more than previous plans.

Gurus Robert Olstein and HOTCHKIS & WILEY increased their holdings of Foot Locker to 1,837,300 and 6,112,700 shares. Currently, Robert Rodriguez has his stake in Foot Locker with 2,814,300 shares. Guru David Dreman sold out his Foot Locker stock.

Cardinal Health Inc. (CAH): Chairman and CEO, Director R. Kerry Clark Bought 20,000 Shares

Cardinal Health, Inc. (CAH), a provider of products and services to the healthcare industry, showed an increase in quarterly earnings of $0.82 or $301.8 million, compared to a previous year’s earnings of $0.66 or $270.7 million. The Drug Enforcement Administration placed company’s license on temporary suspension from controlled drug shipments in the Washington facility. Analysts say the suspension should not affect the company’s earnings. Also, CAH went into an agreement with Neoprobe on last Tuesday to be the sole distributer of Lymphoseek, a radioactive marker used in biopsy procedures.


While Guru John Keeley bought 10,050 shares, Gurus Kenneth Fisher and George Soros sold out of all their CAH holdings. Gurus Edward Owens, Dodge & Cox, and Chris Davis made no changes to their CAH portfolio.

Chairman and CEO, Director of Cardinal Health Inc. (CAH) R. Kerry Clark bought 20,000 shares last Monday at $60.55. One large sell was made by Director Matthew D. Walter, who sold 90,000 shares at around $60.

Cousins Properties Incorporated (CUZ), a real estate investment trust (REIT), gained on its quarterly earnings to $0.14 or $7.3 million from a previous year’s loss of $0.03 or $1.6 million. In this quarter, the company’s revenue increased by 41% to $46.2 million. Some analysts believe the stock is currently undervalued.

Three Gurus own CUZ stock: Third Avenue Management owns 26,500 shares, Ruane Cunniff owns 20,025 shares, and Chris Davis owns 3,062,781.

Windstream Corp. (WIN): Director, President & CEO, Director Jeffery R. Gardner Bought 15,000 Shares

Windstream Corporation (WIN), a rural telecommunications provider, stated on Thursday that its third quarter profit dropped by 40% to $0.25 or $117.7 million compared to the previous year. The company sold Windstream Yellow Pages—the directory publishing portion—to the investment firm Welsh, Carson, and Anderson & Stowe. Money gained from the tax-free transaction will go towards the buy-back of 19.6 million shares and pay-off company debt. Also, Windstream recently acquired CT Communications Inc. for $585 million.


While Guru David Dreman, who owns 630,550 shares, Kenneth Fisher, and Bruce Sherman, kept their WIN shares unchanged, Brian Rogers decreased his shares by 67% to 1 million shares. Chris Davis sold out his holdings in WIN.
