Distinguished value investor Mario Gabelli, CEO and chief investment officer of GAMCO, was on Kudlow Report CNBC discussing the U.S. economy, his investment approach, economic data points to consider and his top stock picks at this point.

-- Are we out of woods in terms of the economy. He is a stock investor and not an economist and believes in bottom-up fundamental analysis to pick his stocks.

-- Top economic indicators he is looking at: Data related to consumer and housing is improving, production is good, autos will flatten going forward after having a big run and consumer net worth has improved which will be good for the economy.

-- His top picks: He is looking at aging of people, aging of infrastructure. He likes Navistar (NAV, Financial), Whole Foods Market (WFM, Financial), Boeing (BA, Financial), Campbell Soup (CPB, Financial), BEAM and Kraft's spin-off.
