Carl Icahn's First Quarter Increase

The always vocal Carl Icahn continues to hold positions which allow him to criticize upper management as well as demand board seats for himself or his partners. Staying true to his image, Icahn made four new buys in the first quarter, with two of those companies being highly popularized and controversial. Icahn only increased his holdings in one company (highlighted below) and did not sell out or decrease his holdings in any stock. As of the end of the first quarter 2013, Icahn held on to 19 stocks that were valued at $16.957 billion.



Transocean Ltd. (RIG)

In the first quarter, Carl Icahn increased his position in Transocean by 245.2%. Icahn bought 14,315,649 shares at an average price of $54.03 per share. Since his increase, the price per share of Transocean has dropped 1.4% from Icahn’s average purchase price. The guru holds on to 20,154,035 shares of Transocean, making up 6.2% of his total portfolio.

Transocean is an international provider of offshore contract drilling services for oil and gas wells. The company’s main business is to contract its drilling rigs, related equipment and work crews predominantly on a dayrate basis to drill oil and gas wells. The company also provides oil and gas drilling management services on a dayrate basis or a completed-project, fixed-price basis, as well as drilling engineering and drilling project management.

Transocean has a market cap of $19.51 billion; its shares were traded around $53.46 with a P/E ratio of 19.50 and P/S ratio of 2.10. The dividend yield of Transocean stocks is 1.60%.

Since the first quarter, Icahn has increased his holdings in four other companies. Icahn increased his position in CVR Refining (CVRR) by 33.3%; he now holds 6 million shares of CVR Refining as of May 20, 2013. Icahn increased his position in Dell (DELL) by 1049.55%; he holds on to 80,468,322 shares as of May 9. Herbalife (HLF) was increased by 3.6% on May 3; Icahn holds on to 16,966,485 shares. Icahn increased his holdings in Nuance Communications (NUAN) by 15.58%. He owns 33,899,274 shares as of April 30, 2013.
