Mohnish Pabrai Increases Two During the Second Quarter

During the second quarter, Guru Mohnish Pabrai remained relatively quiet, with the only action in his portfolio coming from two increases. According to his second quarter financials released on Aug. 12, the guru maintains six stocks valued at $421 million.

Despite the small size of his portfolio, Pabrai remains a highly regarded value investor with a very successful track record spanning back the past 15 years.



Pabrai’s Two Portfolio Increases

Horsehead Holdings (ZINC)

During the second quarter Pabrai made a notable increase in his holdings in Horsead Holding Corporation. The guru upped his stake 141.97% by purchasing a total of 2,974,719 shares of the company’s stock. Pabrai purchased these shares while the stock was trading in the second quarter price range of $9.50 to $12.93 with an estimated average price of $11.19. The price per share has increased 6.7% since then.

Pabrai now holds on to a total of 5,070,000 shares of Horsehead, representing 11.52% of the company’s shares outstanding and 15.4% of his total portfolio.

Horsehead is the largest zinc producer in the U.S. and the leading manufacturer of value-added zinc products including zinc oxide and zinc powder. Horsehead also maintains an electrothermic smelting facility, which is the only one of its type in the Western Hemisphere.

Horsehead Holding Corp has a market cap of $539.5 million. Its shares are currently trading at around $12.21 with a P/S ratio of 1.20 and a P/B ratio of 1.40.

Chesapeake Energy (CHK)

Also during the second quarter Mohnish Pabrai made a much smaller increase to his position in Chesapeake Energy. The guru increased his holdings 1.68% by purchasing 53,895 shares of the company’s stock. He bought these shares in the second quarter price range of $18.47 to $22.58 with an estimated average price of $20.29. Since then the price per share has increased approximately 23.3%.

Pabrai now holds on to 3,268,145 shares of Chesapeake Energy, representing 0.49% of the company’s shares outstanding and 15.8% of his total portfolio.

Chesapeake is a natural gas and oil exploration and production company engaged in the exploration, development and acquisition of properties for the production of natural gas and crude oil from underground reservoirs and it provides marketing and midstream services.

Chesapeake Energy has a market cap of $16.58 billion. Its shares are currently trading at around $24.91 with a P/E ratio of 27.10, a P/S ratio of 1.10 and a P/B ratio of 1.30.
