What the Gurus Bought This Week

The following information is a highlight of the real-time guru activity we saw this week. To view more information on these gurus, check out their guru portfolios. The “Real Time Picks” reports the stock purchases and sells that Gurus have made within the prior two weeks. If a Guru makes a purchase or sell of a company in which they owns a greater-than 5% stake, SEC regulations require them to report their transaction within two days. We saw notable increases Real Time activity from Steve Mandel, Steven Cohen and Richard Perry.

Steve Mandel

On Aug. 26 Mandel added to his holdings in Dollar General (DG). The guru upped his stake by 29.51% by adding a total of 4,029,435 shares to his stake. Mandel bought these shares at an average price of $55.05, and since then the share price has increased approximately 1%.

During the second quarter Mandel sold over 500,000 shares of DG at an estimated average price of $51.85. The price has increased 7.2% since then.

Lone Pine now holds on to 17,684,604 shares of Dollar General representing 5.41% of the company’s shares outstanding. Steve Mandel’s holding history as of the second quarter:

Dollar General is the largest discount retailer in the U.S. by number of stores. The company offers private and national branded items that are frequently used and replenished, such as food, health and beauty aids, cleaning supplies, house wares and seasonal items.

Dollar General has a market cap of $18.02 billion. Its shares are currently trading at around $55.04 with a P/E ratio of 19.00, a P/S ratio of 1.10 and a P/B ratio of 3.50. The company had an annual average earnings growth of 14.6% over the past ten years.

Also on Aug. 26, Steve Mandel upped his stake in DSW (DSW). The guru increased his position a notable 131.68% by purchasing a total of 1,162,354 shares. He bought these shares at an average price of $80.80, and since then the price per share has increased approximately 1%.

Mandel made his initial buy into DSW in 2013Q2 when he purchased 882,710 shares at an estimated average quarterly price of $68.97. Since his first buy, he’s seen gains of 18%.

Lone Pine now maintains 2,045,064 shares of DSW, representing 4.54% of the company’s shares outstanding. Steve Mandel’s holding history as of the second quarter:

DSW is a branded footwear and accessories retailer that offers a wide selection of brand name and designer dress, casual and athletic footwear and accessories for women, men and kids. As of May 18, 2013, DSW operated 377 stores in 42 states.

DSW has a market cap of $3.97 billion. Its shares are currently trading at around $87.77 with a P/E ratio of 28.30, a P/S ratio of 1.70 and a P/B ratio of 4.40. The company had an annual average earnings growth of 36.8% over the past five years.

Steven Cohen

On Aug. 27 Cohen increased his position in Diamond Foods (DMND) by a notable 205.64%. The guru bought a total of 766,000 shares. Cohen bought these shares at an average price of $20.67 per share, and since then the share price has increased approximately 3%.

He now holds on to 1,138,500 shares of Diamond Foods, representing approximately 5.11% of the company’s shares outstanding.

Diamond Foods is a packaged food company that holds the brands Kettle Chips, Emerald snack nuts, Pop Secret popcorn and Diamond of California nuts.

Diamond Foods has a market cap of $475.9 million. Its shares are currently trading at around $21.29 with a P/E ratio of 43.80, a P/S ratio of 0.60 and a P/B ratio of 1.50.

On Aug. 28 Cohen upped his holdings in NQ Mobile (NQ) by a massive 150411%. The guru bought 1,504,210 shares at an average price of $16.76 per share. The price is about the same today.

Cohen initially bought 900 shares during the first quarter and since then he has seen gains of around 131.9%. He now holds on to a total of 1,505,110 shares of NQ Mobile. His position in the company represents 3.47% of the company’s shares outstanding.

NQ Mobile is a global provider of mobile internet services. The company provides mobile security with a proven competency to acquire, engage and monetize customers globally. NQ Mobile’s portfolio includes mobile security and mobile games as well as advertising agents.

The company is currently used by most cell phone companies. NQ Mobile’s partners include Samsung, Blackberry, Motorola, Nokia, HTC and China Mobile.

Richard Perry

As Bill Ackman withdrew his position in J.C. Penney (JCP) last week, this week Perry upped his stake in the struggling retailer.

On Aug. 30 Perry increased his position by 58.33%. The guru purchased a total of 7 million shares at an average price of $12.40. Since his buy, the price per share is down about -2%. The guru now holds on to 19 million shares of J.C. Penney’s representing about 9% of the company’s shares outstanding.

Perry made his first buy into J.C. Penney during the second quarter when he bought 12 million shares.

J.C. Penney sells family apparel and footwear, accessories, fine and fashion jewelry, beauty products through Sephora inside J.C. Penney, and home furnishings. In addition, its department stores provide services, such as styling salon, optical, portrait photography and custom decorating to customers.

J.C. Penney has a market cap of $2.74 billion. Its shares are currently trading at around $12.45 with a P/S ratio of 0.20 and a P/B ratio of 1.40.
