Billionaires Hot for Coal on a 52-week Low

Based on the first eight months of the year, U.S. coal production is down by 3% year over year, as reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The U.S. coal industry sector currently has seven companies out of 22 on a 52-week low but only two Midwestern companies, Cloud Peak Energy Inc. (CLD, Financial) based in Wyoming, and Hallador Energy Co. (HNRG, Financial) based in Colorado, have billionaire guru stakeholders, as of the second quarter of 2013.

Coal Sector Highlight: Cloud Peak Energy Inc. (CLD)

The current CLD share price is $14.84, or 33.5% off the 52-week high of $22.31.

Cloud Peak Energy Inc. has a market cap of $906.45 million, and trades at a P/E of 6.80 and a P/B of 0.95.

Incorporated in 2008, Cloud Peak Energy Inc. is a producer of coal in the U.S. and in the Powder River Basin of Montana and Wyoming. The company produces sub-bituminous steam coal with low sulfur content and sells its coal mainly to domestic electric utilities. Steam coal is consumed by electric utilities and industrial customers as fuel for electricity generation. The company completed its initial public offering in 2009.

The company reported a net income of $4.7 million for the quarter ending June 30, 2013, down from $33.7 million year over year. Diluted earnings per share for the second quarter of 2013 were $0.08 down from $0.55 in the same quarter of 2012. Coal shipments of 20.1 million tons for the second quarter of 2013 were the same year over year. However, Cloud Peak Energy reported that it exported 1.2 million tons to Asia for the quarter, and the company expects Asian shipments to grow to 5 million tons for the end of 2013.

Guru Owners: The top guru owner is Third Avenue Management with 2,145,271 shares as of the second quarter of 2013. The firm’s shares represent 3.53% of shares outstanding and 0.69% of total assets managed.

In the second quarter, the firm increased its position by 2.88%, buying 60,000 shares at an average price of $18.57 per share, and taking a loss of 20.1%.

Coal Sector Highlight: Hallador Energy Co. (HNRG) – Yield 1.15%

The current HNRG share price is $6.95, or 31.9% off the 52-week high of $10.20.

Down 26% over 12 months, Hallador Energy Co. has a market cap of $199.66 million, and trades at a P/E of 8.10 and a P/B of 1.13. The dividend yield is 1.15%.

Organized by its predecessor in 1949, Hallador Energy Co. is engaged in underground coal mining in the state of Indiana through Sunrise Coal LLC (a wholly-owned subsidiary) serving the electric power generation industry. The company also owns a 45% equity interest in Savoy Energy LP, a private oil and gas company with operations in Michigan.

In May 2013, Hallador Energy Co. reported that it had sold out its Carlisle Mine capacity for 2013 and 2014, listing contracts for 2,551,000 tons for the nine months ending Dec. 31, 2013; 2,900,000 tons for 2014 and 1,200,000 tons for 2015. The company paid a quarterly dividend of $0.04 per share in August. The company also reported in August that a long-time investor, Yorktown Energy Partners VI LP, had distributed 750,000 shares of Hallador common stock to its general partners, and expects that it will improve Hallador’s liquidity and float.

Guru Owners: The top guru owner is currently Chuck Royce with 13,200 shares as of the second quarter of 2013. His shares represent 0.05% of shares outstanding.

Royce increased his position by 312.5% in the second quarter, buying 10,000 shares at an average price of $7.40 per share, for a 6.1% loss.
