This week the industrial products sector has fallen to the ninth position of the top 10 U.S. sectors with the most companies on a 52-week low. The industrial products sector currently has 20 companies out of 243 on a 52-week low. The low ratio is 0.08. Here’s a review of four companies screened for yield, active insider trading and billionaire investors.

U.S. Industry Sector: Industrial Products

Highlight: Valmont Industries Inc. (VMI) - Yield 0.70%

The current VMI share price is $134.59, or 18.4% off the 52-week high of $164.93.

Up 1% over 12 months, Valmont Industries Inc. has a market cap of $3.6 billion, and trades at a P/E of 12.60 and a P/B of 2.50.

Founded in 1946, Valmont Industries Inc. provides engineered support structures and utilities support structures. The company produces fabricated metal products, pole and tower structures, as well as mechanized irrigation systems.

Guru Owners: As of the second quarter of 2013, Chuck Royce is the top guru owner with 1,376,825 shares, representing 5.14% of shares outstanding. Royce reduced his position by 5.9% in that quarter, selling 86,340 shares at an average price of $146.58 per share, for a loss of 8.2%.

In a five-year history of mostly gains, Chuck Royce averaged a gain of 63% on 1,977,425 shares bought at an average price of $82.74 per share. He also gained 92% on 600,600 shares sold at an average price of $123.18 per share.

The current AP share price is $17.62, or 16.2% off the 52-week high of $21.02.

Up 1% over 12 months, Ampco-Pittsburgh Corporation has a market cap of $182.6 million, and trades at a P/E of 29.90 and a P/B of 1.00.

Incorporated in 1929, Ampco-Pittsburgh Corporation classifies its businesses in two segments: Forged and Cast Rolls, and Air and Liquid Processing. The company produces industrial products through a number of its own companies.

Briggs & Stratton Corporation is a producer of air-cooled gasoline engines for outdoor power equipment. The company designs, manufactures, markets and services these products for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) worldwide. In addition, the company markets and sells related service parts and accessories for its engines.

Guru Owners: As of the second quarter of 2013, Charles Brandes is the top guru stakeholder with 1,465,890 shares, representing 3.06% of shares outstanding. In that quarter, Brandes increased his position by 75.53%, buying 630,772 shares bought at an average price of $22.19 per share, taking a loss of 14.2%.

Down 12% over 12 months, Virco Manufacturing Corporation has a market cap of $29.8 million, and trades at a P/B of 1.00. The company does not pay a dividend.

Incorporated in 1950, Virco Manufacturing Corporation manufactures an assortment of products, including mobile tables, mobile storage equipment, desks, computer furniture, chairs, activity tables, folding chairs and folding tables. The company produces the broadest line of furniture for the K-12 market of any manufacturer in the United States. Virco also provides a variety of products for preschool markets and has recently developed products that are targeted for college, university, and corporate learning center environments.

Guru Owners: As of the second quarter of 2013, Jim Simons is the sole guru owner with 144,900 shares, representing 1% of shares outstanding.

His five-year trading history is fairly bleak, with 14 consecutive quarters of losses between 2008 and 2011. Simons has sold out three times during the holding history.

His most recent sell out was in the third quarter of 2012 when he sold 142,200 shares sold at an average price of $1.76 for a gain of 144.8%.

Since that time he has averaged a loss of 22% on 144,900 shares bought at an average price of $2.60 per share.
