Google’s (GOOG, Financial) Nexus 5 has given solid reasons for Android lovers to buy the smartphone. The handset has a 5-inch HD high resolution screen, and features 8-megapixel rear camera. The camera may not be as fine as the ones that are found in Apple’s (AAPL, Financial) iPhone 5S, Nokia Lumia 1020, Samsung Galaxy S4 or HTC One. But the price at which one can own the newly released smartphone is extremely attractive. The 16GB version of the smartphone comes for $349 only, while the 32GB model is priced at $399. It would be difficult to get premium handsets like the Nexus 5 at such prices tags at which it is being marketed.

Moreover, the fourth largest US national carrier T-Mobile (TMUS, Financial) offers the handset in installment which is quite feasible for individuals who are hesitant to shed the phone cost in one go. Let’s take a look at the offer.

T-Mobile asks $100 more for Nexus 5

One Friday, the carrier said that Nexus 5 can be purchased from November 14 by making a down payment of $42 and making a monthly payment of $17 for two years. The entire amount paid over a span of 2 years along with the down payment adds up to $450, which is $100 more than what Google is asking if purchased from the Google store. So it seems that T-Mobile is keeping a solid margin for itself by selling the highly coveted handset at such a rate. However, a representative said that T-Mobile pays the full retail price for the phone.

However, it is noteworthy to observe how Google and LG (LPL, Financial) managed to incorporate such high-end specifications in the phone and charges such a reasonable price compared to competitors handsets giving similar features. For instance, Apple charges $650 for an unlocked iPhone. The other option is to purchase it at $200 by entering into a two year contract from national carriers.

Sprint (S, Financial), is offering Nexus 5 for $50 under the two year contract with the company. The “regular price” of the phone comes to $450 for the buyers, same as what it would come to in case buyers purchase it from T-Mobile.

Let’s take a brief look at the description of the handset for ones who are considering it.

The device: at a glance

The South Korean LG manufactured device is powered by Android KitKat 4.4 OS, with 2GB RAM and Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor which has the capability to pull the speed up to 2.28GHz. The most attractive feature of the phone is that it can smoothly run on devices that have 512MB RAM only. Google has partnered with LG for the second time following the success of the Nexus 4. The Nexus 4 sported Gorilla Glass 2 with a cheap glass cover on the back, but Nexus 5 boasts of Gorilla Glass 3 and has changed the back glass to matte plastic. This enabled LG and Google to lower the weight of Nexus 5 although the screen size increased.

The big screen that Google offers would be extremely useful for business users, but many might prefer to carry an iPhone which gives a premium feeling because of the metal back case instead of cheap plastic. However, both phones have beautiful specifications that justify their respective prices. Which one is a better phone depends a lot on the budget and need of the buyer. It would be interesting to see whether Nexus 5 manages to compete with other high end phones which are much costlier.
