George Soros' 5 Largest Buys Amid Bet Against the S&P 500

Legendary investor George Soros (Trades, Portfolio)’ Soros Fund Management LLC selected 77 new stocks for their $11.8 billion portfolio, which calculates to 30% quarter-over-quarter turnover in the total count of 237 long positions.

However, Soros may not be so optimistic about the direction of the market in the near future. The seasoned market reader on Friday revealed owning 7,090,000 “puts” on the S&P 500 SPDR ETF – a bet that the market will go down. The position is sized at 11.1% of his portfolio, making it his largest holding. He hedged the position with a further 405,000 “calls” on the S&P, indicating he is overall bullish on the market.

Soros also made several sizable long investments in U.S. companies, the largest of which are Essent Group Ltd. (ESNT), JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM), Leucadia National Corp. (LUK), Citigroup Inc. (C) and Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX).

Soros bought 7,548,618 shares of Essent Group Ltd., a 1.5% portfolio position. The stock’s fourth quarter share price average was $22 per share.
