David Tepper's Top Stock Holdings in His Favorite Sector

David Tepper (Trades, Portfolio) believes 2015 could play out like 1999 as both years were preceded by trouble in Russia and “worldwide money” that was “made too easy for where USA fundamentals were in both late 1998 and 2014,” he told CNBC on Wednesday.

He also foresaw overvaluation of markets next year, and said they are at fair value now.

As of the end of the third quarter, Tepper’s top sector in his long portfolio at his hedge fund, Appaloosa Management, is Consumer Cyclical, which composes 24.7%. Consumer Cyclical stocks tend to respond to the direction of the economy.

Tepper’s largest holdings within this sector at quarter-end were: General Motors Co. (GM, Financial), Priceline Group Inc. (PCLN, Financial), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (GT, Financial) and CBS Corp (CBS, Financial).

General Motors Co. (GM, Financial)

GM comprised a full 7% of Tepper’s portfolio, and he increased the position by 14.5% in the third quarter to 14,863,791 shares. General Motors’ third quarter price averaged $35 and has declined by 18% year to date.

Tepper held 366,574 shares of Priceline Group, representing 6.3% of his portfolio, and also increase the position in the third quarter, this time by 16.4%. Priceline shares cost on average $1,231 in the third quarter. So far this year the stock has fallen 1.3%.
