The biggest tech show at Las Vegas, the CES 2015, is slated to be held from January 6-9 and analysts have opined that the Internet of Things (IoT) would take center stage with more than 900 innovations on display at the Consumer Electronics Show. In fact, this show would not only relate to new tablet and smartphone or smartwatch offerings but also technology which might be the upcoming trend in the coming years, if not of 2015. The major highlight of this show this year would be concentrated around the Internet of Things and how it could change our lives radically. Let’s take a sneak peek and find out what are the expectations around IoT at the show.

The concept of IoT

The IoT marks the next level of evolution for the Internet with daily household objects such as television sets, cars, home appliances, kitchen appliances, all connected to the web. Not only is IoT expected to change how we interact with products, it is slated to turn into a booming industry as research firm IDC have predicted that IoT would be a $3 trillion industry by 2020.

According to CES’s own press statement, this year’s show shall have the largest collection of products, services and technologies that make up the IoT, with more than 900 exhibitors planning to show off their innovation in this regard.

Let’s dig in further to find out what are the key developments that could be a part to the show and which could ideally promote this IoT concept which is yet to materialize in the near future.

The key IoT display centers

To start with the mention of companies who are going to make key IoT announcements at the CES 2015, the first tech giant which comes as the top of the mind recall is Samsung (SSNLF, Financial) that is expected to release the Tizen-OS powered smart television sets at the conference.

The company is planning to show displays based on environments like Office, Restaurant, and Hotel and such smart television sets can be synced with the smartphones with the TV being the centre for Internet-connected homes.

Samsung’s CEO, Boo-Keun Yoon stated – “As more and more of these devices and appliances connect to one another, and with other objects, we will begin to see an even greater transformation…”

Also Intel (INTC, Financial) is expected to be a hit in the IoT world and this was particularly conveyed when in last December the company unveiled its new platform for IoT to make it easier for companies to create internet-connected smart products using its chips, security and software.

With Intel’s Internet of Things group having grown to $530 million in revenue in the September quarter which represents the whopping 14% growth rate over the previous year, its growth momentum is much faster compared to the company’s PC business. Thus, expectations are building around the company displaying some new concept around IoT in the CES 2015.

Another question which companies will have to answer during the show is how they are looking ahead to maintain the privacy and security of the IoT enabled devices.

Even automotive electronics would be a part to this show, and the concept of connected cars that happens to be in realm of IoT is expected to gather impetus during the CES 2015.

And finally…

As IoT is expected to be the technology that would ride the web connectivity in the coming quarters, the CES 2015 could act as a precursor showcasing such technology to global consumers who would be attending this show. Let’s take a quick break and watch out for the futuristic technologies that find their place at the CES 2015.
