Acquisition of Esterline Stock Makes It Fifth-Largest Stake in Dell's Portfolio

The founder and CEO of Dell Inc (DELL, Financial), guru Michael Dell (Trades, Portfolio) is one of the 50 wealthiest people in the world. As a philanthropist, he has been generous with his money through the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation he established in 1999; as an investor, his portfolio is handled by MSD Capital, which has had great success in managing his investments.

In the fourth quarter, Dell added Esterline Technologies (ESL, Financial), a Bellevue, Wash.-based company that designs, makes and markets products mostly for aerospace and defense customers, to his portfolio, buying the stock twice in December. Dell purchased 1,624,578 shares for an average price of $112.56 per share. Del’s first Esterline purchase had a 32.77% impact on his portfolio; his second purchase had a 23.1%.

Although Esterline is new to Dell’s portfolio, the purchase made it his fifth-largest stake.

Six gurus – Joel Greenblatt (Trades, Portfolio), Jim Simons (Trades, Portfolio), Robert Olstein (Trades, Portfolio), PRIMECAP Management (Trades, Portfolio), Signature Select Canadian Fund (Trades, Portfolio) and David Dreman (Trades, Portfolio) – have Esterline stock in their portfolios. NWQ Managers (Trades, Portfolio) sold its stake in Esterline in the fourth quarter.

Dell also added to his existing stake in WEX Inc (WEX, Financial), a Maine-based company that provides financial and information management solutions to its clients. Dell bought 93,607 shares for an average price of $106.6 per share. The transaction had a 1.19% impact on his portfolio.

WEX is the smallest of the seven stakes in Dell’s portfolio.

Nine gurus – Paul Tudor Jones (Trades, Portfolio), Jim Simons (Trades, Portfolio), Joel Greenblatt (Trades, Portfolio), Columbia Wanger (Trades, Portfolio), Ron Baron (Trades, Portfolio), Mariko Gordon (Trades, Portfolio), Steven Cohen (Trades, Portfolio), RS Investment Management (Trades, Portfolio) and John Keeley (Trades, Portfolio) – have shares of WEX in their portfolios. Pioneer Investments (Trades, Portfolio) divested itself of its stake in the fourth quarter.

Dell also reduced his stake in DineEquity Inc (DIN, Financial), a California-based company that franchises and operates International House Of Pancakes and Applebee's restaurants, on two occasions in the fourth quarter. In all, Dell sold 200,000 shares for an average price of $92.61 per share. The first time Dell sold a portion of his DineEquity stock, it had a -3.16% impact on his portfolio; the second time he sold the stock, it had a -2.96% impact.

DineEquity is the third-largest stake in Dell’s portfolio.
