A Look at Recent Insider Buys

The All-In-One Guru Screener can be used to find insider buys over the last week by clicking on the Insiders tab and changing the settings for All Insider Buying to “$1,000,000+” and duration to "August 2015."

According to the above filters, the following are the recent buys from company insiders over the past week:

On Aug. 14, Mast Capital Management LLC, which is a 10% owner of Unwired Planet Inc. (UPIP), bought 6,568,780 shares at an average price of $1.00 and a total cost of $6,568,780. Since that buy, the price of the stock has tanked by 18%.

The company has an insider ownership of 8% and an institutional ownership of 59%.

The price of Unwired Planet has dropped by 59% during the last 12 months, and is trading with a very low P/B ratio of 2.95. The company has negative returns with ROA -7.64% and ROE -18.83%. Financial strength is rated 4/10, with cash to debt of 3.33 and interest coverage of 0.92 that show the company has put aside enough cash.

The only shareholder holding the company is Jim Simons (Trades, Portfolio), who holds 2.57% of outstanding shares.

On Aug. 17, BCP IV GrafTech Holdings L.P., which is 10% owner of GrafTech International Ltd (GTI), bought 139,868,718 shares at an average price of $5.05 and a total cost of $706,337,000. Since that buy, the price of the stock did not face any change.

The company has an insider ownership of 2% and an institutional ownership of 70%.

The price of GrafTech has dropped by 43% during the last 12 months, and is trading with a very low P/B ratio of 0.76 and a forward P/E of 9.37. The company has negative returns with ROA -10.61% and ROE -19.26%. Financial strength is rated 5/10 and the company doesn’t have enough cash to pay its debts, as cash to debt is 0.03.

The main shareholder holding the company is Mario Gabelli (Trades, Portfolio) who holds 4.41% of outstanding shares, followed by Louis Moore Bacon (Trades, Portfolio) with 0.08% and Joel Greenblatt (Trades, Portfolio) with 0.05%.

On Aug. 17 and 20, Softbank Group Corp, which is a 10% owner of Sprint Corp (S), bought a total of 31,469,352 shares with a total cost of $142,717,500. These two buys were at the price of $4.77 and $4.33.

The insider keeps on buying shares of Sprint Corp as reported in my previous update.

On Aug. 18, Gerald J. Ford, who is director of Freeport-McMoRan Inc (FCX), bought 1,000,000 shares at an average price of $9.94 and a total cost of $9,940,000. Since that buy, the price of the stock has dropped by 2.1%.

The company has an insider ownership of 1% and an institutional ownership of 77%.

The price of Freeport-McMoRan has dropped by 74% during the last 12 months, and is trading with a very low P/B ratio of 0.73 and a forward P/E of 6.39. The company has negative returns with ROA -11.09% and ROE -36.48%. Financial strength is rated 5/10 and the company doesn’t have enough cash to pay its debts, as cash to debt is 0.02.

The main shareholder holding the company is Stanley Druckenmiller (Trades, Portfolio) who holds 0.34% of outstanding shares, followed by Mario Gabelli (Trades, Portfolio) with 0.26% and Steven Cohen (Trades, Portfolio) with 0.12%.

The price of ONEOK Partners has dropped by 46% during the last 12 months, and is trading with a very low P/B ratio of 1.34 and a forward P/E of 13.91. The company has positive returns with ROA 13.48% and ROE 7.05%. Financial strength is rated 6/10, but the company has cash to pay its interest with an interest coverage ratio of 4.03, while it doesn’t have money to pay its debts because the cash do debt ratio is 0.01.

The only shareholder holding the company is Jim Simons (Trades, Portfolio), who holds 0.02% of outstanding shares.
