Bill Ackman Trims Position in Mondelez International

Guru reduces stake nearly 50% by slashing more than 20 million shares

Guru Bill Ackman (Trades, Portfolio)Â reduced his position in Mondelez International Inc. (MDLZ, Financial)Â by more than 47% with the sale of 20,424,117 shares on March 16.

Mondelez International was formerly known as Kraft Foods until the company completed the spinoff of its North American grocery business, Kraft Food Groups. Mondelez International manufactures and markets food and beverage products for consumers in 165 countries around the world. The company owns nine billion-dollar brands such as Oreo, Nabisco; Milka, Cadbury Dairy Milk and Cadbury chocolates; Trident gum; Jacobs coffee and Tang powdered beverages.

As of Dec. 31, 2015, Mondelez International had 99,000 employees working for the company worldwide.

Mondelez International has a market cap of $64.7 billion, a P/E ratio of 9.30, an enterprise value of $78.32 billion and a P/B ratio of 2.33.

Mondelez International has two good signs, according to GuruFocus. The company’s operating margin is 30.02%, and the company has been expanding its operations which is usually a good sign. Mondelez International’s P/B ratio is also close to a one-year low at 2.33. The one-year low is 2.13.

Ackman is a well-known contrarian investor, philanthropist and the founder and CEO of Pershing Square Capital Management LP. Prior to founding Pershing Square Capital Management LP, Ackman attended Harvard College where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in history. After receiving his  degree, Ackman continued his education at Harvard Business School where he received his M.B.A.

Mondelez International is also traded in Germany, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Switzerland and the U.K.Â

Mondelez International competes in a highly saturated, highly competitive industry. It’s possible that Ackman decided to reduce his position in this holding due to the high fluxuation and variance of the global competition within the Global Confectioners industry in which Mondelez International competes.
