U.S. market indexes were mixed in trading on Thursday.
For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average was lower closing at 18,456.35 for a loss of 15.82 points or 0.09%. The Standard & Poor's 500 was higher, closing at 2,170.06 for a gain of 3.48 points or 0.16%. The Nasdaq Composite closed higher at 5,154.98 for a gain of 15.17 points or 0.30%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.72 for a loss of 0.11 points or 0.86%.
In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, stocks leading losses for the day included:
- Boeing (BA, Financial) -2.17%.
- Caterpillar (CAT, Financial) -1.40%.
- Verizon (VZ, Financial) -0.83%.
- Cisco (CSCO, Financial) -0.78%.
- ExxonMobil (XOM, Financial) -0.78%.
In the technology sector, stocks continued to gain with the following stocks leading in trading for the day:
A few reports were on the economic calendar for the day. The International Trade Report showed the trade deficit widening to $63.3 billion. Jobless claims were higher by 14,000 for the week increasing to a total of 266,000.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average reported another day of losses following the Federal Open Market Committee’s decision to keep its funds rate unchanged. In a CNBC report Thursday, market specialists discussed how no change in rates from the Federal Reserve is affecting stocks.
