Presidential Debate a Factor for the Market This Week

U.S. market indexes were lower Monday.

For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 18,094.83 for a loss of 166.62 points or 0.91%. The Standard & Poor's 500 was also lower, closing at 2,146.10 for a loss of 18.59 points or 0.86%. The Nasdaq Composite closed lower at 5,257.49 for a loss of 48.26 points or 0.91%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 14.44 for a gain of 2.15 points or 17.49%.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

Leading reports on the economic calendar for Monday included New Home Sales and the Dallas Fed Manufacturing Survey. New home sales were reported at 609,000 SAAR which was just below consensus of 598,000 SAAR and also down from last month’s 659,000 SAAR. The Dallas Fed Manufacturing Survey’s Production Index gained to 16.7 from 4.5. The General Activity Index stayed negative at -3.7 which was slightly higher than its previous reading of -6.2.

Stocks were lower Monday as investors awaited Monday evening’s debate with numerous issues affecting the market and near-term trading.
