Legendary Value Investor Jean-Marie Eveillard Will Speak at 2017 GuruFocus Value Conference, Omaha. He will be the keynote speaker at the Dinner at Thursday, May 4, 2017.
Jean-Marie became a senior advisor to the First Eagle Investment (Trades, Portfolio) Management Global Value team in March 2009 and now serves as board trustee to the First Eagle Funds. From 1979–2004, Jean-Marie was the portfolio manager for the First Eagle funds. He then moved to an advisory position but returned as portfolio manager in March 2007 until September 2008 when he shared responsibility for the funds with Matthew McLennan, and moved again to the position of Senior Adviser in March 2009.
Jean-Marie was named Morningstar's International Manager of the Year in 2001, and in 2003 received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Morningstar.
The basic thesis of Jean-Marie’s investment strategy was to buy any size company anywhere in the world as long as he could buy the company at a reasonable discount to its intrinsic value. During his tenure of twenty-five years the fund averaged 15.7% compound annual performance and suffered only two calendar years of loss. His value discipline was the key for the fund to avoid the stock market mania and the losses caused by the burst of the bubbles, which included:
- Japan stock market bubble from 1986 to 1991.
- Dot com Bubble: From 1997-2000
- Financial and housing bubble 2004-2007
