US Market Indexes Continue to Gain

Momentum continues to help stocks on Tuesday

U.S. market indexes were higher on Tuesday, continuing to reach new highs. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19023.87 for a gain of 67.18 points or 0.35%. The S&P 500 closed at 2202.94 for a gain of 4.76 points or 0.22%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5386.35 for a gain of 17.49 points or 0.33%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 12.26 for a loss of -0.16 points or -1.29%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Stocks continued to gain Tuesday with post-election momentum. Affecting trading for the day was also the Existing Home Sales report. Existing home sales were 5.600 million SAAR in October, up from 5.490 million SAAR in September and above consensus of 5.420 million SAAR.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, stocks leading gains for the day included the following:

Verizon (VZ, Financial) 2.46%

Home Depot (HD, Financial) 2.19%

Boeing (BA, Financial) 1.80%

Intel (INTC, Financial) 1.40%

DuPont (DD, Financial) 1.23%

UnitedHealth (UNH, Financial) 1.23%

Top sectors for the broad market were real estate and consumer discretionary. Technology stocks were also higher. The S&P 500 technology sector gained 0.31%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1334.26 for a gain of 12.03 points or 0.91%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 816.82 for a gain of 10.48 points or 1.30%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 7913.58 for a loss of 40.65 points or 0.52%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9389.06 for a gain of 125.95 or 1.36%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1628.53 for a gain of 11.85 points or 0.73%; the S&P 100 Index at 971.38 for a gain of 1.20 points or 0.12%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1311.42 for a gain of 3.82 points or 0.29%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1222.90 for a gain of 2.91 points or 0.24%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 623.81 for a gain of 2.39 points or 0.38%.
