Dow Jones and S&P 500 lead gains with new closing highs

U.S. market indexes were higher Wednesday, continuing gains for the week. The Dow Jones and S&P 500 reached new highs. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19549.62 for a gain of 297.84 points or 1.55%. The S&P 500 closed at 2241.35 for a gain of 29.12 points or 1.32%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5393.76 for a gain of 60.76 points or 1.14%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 12.15 for a gain of 0.36 points or 3.05%.

Wednesday’s market movers

Economic factors affecting market trading on Wednesday included the following:

  • MBA Mortgage Applications decreased -0.7% for the week.
  • EIA Petroleum Status report showed a decrease of -2.4 million barrels in oil inventory.
  • The Federal Reserve’s Consumer Credit report showed an increase of $16 billion in consumer credit outstanding for October.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains for the day:

Nike (NKE, Financial) 3.03%

Home Depot (HD, Financial) 2.89%

Visa (V, Financial) 2.85%

IBM (IBM, Financial) 2.77%

In the broad market, real estate, technology and consumer discretionary led gains. In technology, the S&P 500’s technology sector gained 1.90%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1364.51 for a gain of 11.84 points or 0.88%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 841.51 for a gain of 8.83 points or 1.06%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8063.81 for a gain of 54.78 points or 0.68%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9707.89 for a gain of 113.43 points or 1.18%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1677.79 for a gain of 19.51 points or 1.18%; the S&P 100 Index at 986.60 for a gain of 12.33 points or 1.27%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1335.46 for a gain of 16.49 points or 1.25%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1244.87 for a gain of 15.77 points or 1.28%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 636.38 for a gain of 7.55 points or 1.20%.
