US Market Indexes End the Week Higher

All 3 major indexes reach new highs on Friday

U.S. market indexes were higher on Friday with all three major indexes reaching new highs.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19,756.85 for a gain of 142.04 points or 0.72%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,259.53 for a gain of 13.34 points or 0.59%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,444.50 for a gain of 27.14 points or 0.50%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 11.75 for a loss of 0.89 points or 7.04%.

For the week the Dow Jones gained 3.06%, the S&P 500 gained 3.08%, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 3.58%.

Friday’s market movers

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index increased to 98.0 from 93.8. Consensus was for an Index level of 94.1.
  • The Baker Hughes Rig Count for North America reported an increase of 57 oil rigs at 854.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Top sectors for the broad market were consumer staples, health care and utilities. Technology was also higher for the day with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.72%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,388.05 for a gain of 1.69 points or 0.12%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 857.50 for a gain of 2.14 points or 0.25%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,171.52 for a loss of 6.79 points or 0.08%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,861.90 for a gain of 21.80 points or 0.22%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,692.98 for a loss of -3.14 points or -0.19%; the S&P 100 Index at 996.02 for a gain of 7.94 points or 0.80%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,346.95 for a gain of 6.47 points or 0.48%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,254.65 for a gain of 6.42 points or 0.51%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 640.72 for a gain of 2.49 points or 0.39%.
