Financial stocks lead market gains on Thursday

U.S. market indexes were higher on Thursday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19,852.24 for a gain of 59.71 points or 0.30%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,262.03 for a gain of 8.75 points or 0.39%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,456.85 for a gain of 20.18 points or 0.37%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.77 for a loss of 0.42 points or 3.18%.

Thursday’s market movers

Economic reports affecting market trading on Thursday included the following:

  • The Consumer Price Index gained 0.2% in November and reported an annual increase of 1.7%.
  • Jobless claims decreased by 4,000 to 254,000.
  • The PMI Manufacturing Index increased to 54.2 in December from 53.9.
  • In December the Housing Market Index increased to 70 from 63.
