U.S. market indexes were lower on Wednesday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19,833.68 for a loss of 111.36 points or 0.56%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,249.92 for a loss of 18.96 points or 0.84%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,438.56 for a loss of 48.89 points or 0.89%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 12.95 for a gain of 0.96 points or 8.01%.

Wednesday’s market movers

Pending home sales was the leading economic report for Wednesday. The Pending Home Sales Index decreased -2.5% to 107.3.

In the broad market, losses were led by energy and industrial stocks. Technology was also lower for the day with the S&P 500 technology sector down -0.89%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,360.83 for a loss of 16.88 points or 1.23%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 839.61 for a loss of 10.18 points or 1.20%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 7,983.02 for a loss of 99.22 points or 1.23%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,665.90 for a loss of 107.86 points or 1.10%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,662.51 for a loss of 17.72 points or 1.05%; the S&P 100 Index at 997.11 for a loss of 6.86 points or 0.68%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,337.70 for a loss of 11.92 points or 0.88%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,247.43 for a loss of 10.74 points or 0.85%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 634.41 for a loss of 6.66 points or 1.04%.
