The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 14.07 for a gain of 0.70 points or 5.24%.
For 2016, the Dow Jones gained 13.48%. The S&P 500 gained 9.58% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 7.54%.
Friday’s market movers
Trading was thin leading up to the holiday weekend. The Dow Jones is now 237.4 points from reaching its 20,000 milestone. On the economic calendar, the Baker Hughes Rig Count report showed a decrease of 62 oil rigs in North America with a total of 815 for the week of Dec. 30. In the commodities market, WTI crude oil gained 0.06% with end of day trading at $53.80. Brent crude oil was slightly lower at $56.82 with a loss of -0.05%.
