US Market Indexes Higher With Positive Jobs Report

Jobs report shows an increase of 156,000 jobs

U.S. market indexes were higher on Friday and ended the week with gains. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19963.80 for a gain of 64.51 points or 0.32%. The S&P 500 closed at 2276.98 for a gain of 7.98 points or 0.35%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5521.06 for a gain of 33.12 points or 0.60%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 11.40 for a loss of -0.27 points or -2.31%.

For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.98%. The S&P 500 Index gained 1.67% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 2.52%.

Friday’s market movers

The December jobs report helped stocks to gain. For the month, the labor market added 156,000 jobs. The unemployment rate increased to 4.7%. Other economic reports affecting trading on Friday included the following:

  • The international trade deficit increased to -$45.2 billion above consensus of -$44.5 billion for the International Trade report.
  • Factory orders decreased -2.4%.
  • The Baker Hughes North American rig count increased to 870 from 815.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1367.28 for a loss of -4.65 points or -0.34%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 840.17 for a loss of -4.87 points or -0.58%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8062.99 for a loss of -16.52 points or -0.20%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9745.94 for a loss of -33.95 points or -0.35%.
