U.S. market indexes traded mostly flat Tuesday with the Nasdaq Composite reaching a new high.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19,855.53 for a loss of 31.85 points or 0.16%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,268.90 with no gain or loss for the day. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,551.82 for a gain of 20.00 points or 0.36%. The VIX Volatility Index was at 11.46 for a loss of 0.10 points or 0.87%.
