US Market Indexes Lower to Start the Week

Earnings and uncertainty over new tax policies led to a lower start to the week for stocks

U.S. market indexes were lower to start the week on Tuesday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19,826.77 for a loss of 58.96 points or 0.30%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,267.89 for a loss of 6.75 points or 0.30%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,538.73 for a loss of 35.39 points or 0.63%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 11.95 for a gain of 0.72 points or 6.41%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Companies continued to report fourth-quarter earnings, and no leading economic reports were on the calendar for Tuesday. William Dudley, Lael Brainard and John Williams spoke during the day from the Federal Reserve.

In the broad market, the financial sector led losses, and the consumer staples sector led gains. Technology stocks were lower for the day with the S&P 500 technology sector down 0.30%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,352.32 for a loss of 19.73 points or 1.44%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 828.42 for a loss of 11.44 points or 1.36%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,012.02 for a loss of 102.48 points or 1.26%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,637.36 for a loss of 91.49 points or 0.94%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,672.76 for a loss of 14.64 points or 0.87%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,003.17 for a loss of 3.42 points or 0.34%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,348.11 for a loss of 5.79 points or 0.43%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,258.64 for a loss of 4.31 points or 0.34%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 635.84 for a loss of 0.34 points or 0.05%.
