US Market Indexes Lower for the Week

Dow Jones closes at 19,827.25 on Friday

U.S. market indexes were lower for the week with gains on Friday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19827.25 for a gain of 94.85 points, or 0.48%. The S&P 500 closed at 2271.31 for a gain of 7.62 points, or 0.34%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5555.33 for a gain of 15.25 points, or 0.28%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 11.54 for a loss of 1.24 points, or -9.70%.

Friday’s market movers

Stocks gained on Friday with the presidential inauguration. Federal Reserve officials speaking on Friday included John Williams and Patrick Harker. Baker Hughes (BHI, Financial) also reported its North American Rig Count, which showed an increase of 62 oil rigs for the week.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Merck (MRK, Financial) up 3.65%.

Procter & Gamble (PG, Financial) up 3.25%.

IBM (IBM, Financial) up 2.24%.

In the broad market, the materials sector led gains. Technology was also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector up 0.55%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1351.85 for a gain of 6.10 points, or 0.45%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 827.56 for a gain of 3.60 points, or 0.44%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8012.45 for a gain of 27.75 points, or 0.35%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9650.88 for a gain of 52.62 points, or 0.55%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1675.68 for a gain of 8.24 points, or 0.49%; the S&P 100 Index at 1003.04 for a gain of 2.93 points, or 0.29%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1350.10 for a gain of 4.52 points, or 0.34%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1260.70 for a gain of 4.10 points, or 0.33%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 635.76 for a gain of 3.28 points, or 0.52%.
