U.S. market indexes were lower on Tuesday.
For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,812.24 for a loss of 25.20 points or 0.12%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,363.64 for a loss of 6.11 points or 0.26%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,825.44 for a loss of 36.46 points or 0.62%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 12.84 for a gain of 0.75 points or 6.20%.
Tuesday’s market movers
Stocks were mostly lower Tuesday as investors await President Donald Trump’s first speech before Congress Tuesday evening. Economic reports affecting trading on Tuesday included the following:
- Gross domestic product (GDP) reported a 1.9% seasonally adjusted annual growth rate which was unchanged from the previous quarter.
- International trade reported a deficit of -$69.2 billion which was an increase from the previous report of -$64.4 billion.
- The S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller Home Price Index increased 0.9% in December.
- The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index increased to 114.8.
In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:
- Walmart (WMT, Financial) -1.17%.
- Nike (NKE, Financial) -0.94%.
- DuPont (DD, Financial) -0.87%.
- Intel (INTC, Financial) -0.86%.
In the broad market, consumer discretionary stocks led losses. Technology was also lower with the S&P 500 technology sector down 0.48%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,386.85 for a loss of 21.12 points or 1.50%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 846.49 for a loss of 13.29 points or 1.55%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8262.18 for a loss of 129.71 points or 1.55%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM I,ndex closed at 9,795.87 for a loss of 112.37 points or 1.13%.
