US Market Indexes Lower on Tuesday With Losses Led by Financials

U.S. market indexes were lower on Tuesday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,668.01 for a loss of 237.85 points or 1.14%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,344.02 for a loss of 29.45 points or 1.24%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,793.83 for a loss of 107.70 points or 1.82%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 12.47 for a gain of 1.13 points or 9.96%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Momentum in U.S. equities continued to slow with uncertainty about the implementation of new Trump administration policies. Effects from the potential for three rate increases in 2017 also slowed stock momentum as fixed income yields gained. There were no leading economic reports on the market calendar for the day.

In the broad market, financial stocks appeared to digress the most from uncertainty around regulatory reform. Technology stocks were also lower with the S&P 500 technology sector down -1.43%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,346.55 for a loss of 37.55 points or 2.71%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 822.09 for a loss of 22.16 points or 2.62%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,063.12 for a loss of 213.55 points or 2.58%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,421.67 for a loss of 218.65 points or 2.27%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,688.95 for a loss of 33.18 points or 1.93%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,041.26 for a loss of 12.18 points or 1.16%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,386.90 for a loss of 19.94 points or 1.42%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,298.37 for a loss of 17.23 points or 1.31%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 649.11 for a loss of 5.96 points or 0.91%.
