Momentum continues to slow ahead of House vote on health care bill

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,661.30 Wednesday for a loss of 6.71 points or 0.03%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,348.45 for a gain of 4.43 points or 0.19%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,821.64 for a gain of 27.82 points or 0.48%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 12.81 for a gain of 0.34 points or 2.73%.

Wednesday’s market movers

Market momentum continued to slow with uncertainty over Trump administration policies and Thursday's House of Representatives vote on the Obamacare replacement bill. Economic reports affecting market trading Wednesday included the following:

  • The Mortgage Bankers Association’s mortgage applications index decreased by 2.7% for the week.
  • The FHFA House Price Index was unchanged for the month and decreased to a 5.7% gain for the year.
  • Existing home sales decreased to 5.480 million SAAR.
  • The EIA Petroleum Status report showed an increase of 5 million barrels in oil inventory for the week.

In the broad market, financial stocks continued to report losses. Technology was higher for the day with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.63%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,345.60 for a loss of 0.95 points or 0.07%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 820.06 for a loss of 2.03 points or 0.25%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,069.99 for a gain of 6.87 points or 0.09%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,406.09 for a loss of 15.58 points or 0.17%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,691.84 for a gain of 2.89 points or 0.17%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,042.23 for a gain of 0.97 points or 0.09%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,389.20 for a gain of 2.31 points or 0.17%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,300.78 for a gain of 2.41 points or 0.19%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 649.85 for a gain of 0.74 points or 0.11%.
