U.S. market indexes gained on Tuesday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,701.50 for a gain of 150.52 points or 0.73%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,358.57 for a gain of 16.98 points or 0.73%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,875.14 for a gain of 34.77 points or 0.60%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 11.53 with a loss of 0.97 points or 7.76%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Economic reports affecting market trading on Tuesday included the following:

  • International trade in goods reported a lower deficit at -$64.8 billion.
  • Retail inventories increased 0.4%.
  • Wholesale inventories increased 0.4% after a -0.2% decrease.
  • The S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller Home Price Index increased 0.9%.
  • The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index increased to 125.6.
