Dow Jones Up More Than 150 Points

U.S. market indexes gained on Tuesday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,701.50 for a gain of 150.52 points or 0.73%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,358.57 for a gain of 16.98 points or 0.73%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,875.14 for a gain of 34.77 points or 0.60%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 11.53 with a loss of 0.97 points or 7.76%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Economic reports affecting market trading on Tuesday included the following:

• International trade in goods reported a lower deficit at -$64.8 billion.
• Retail inventories increased 0.4%.
• Wholesale inventories increased 0.4% after a -0.2% decrease.
• The S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller Home Price Index increased 0.9%.
• The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index increased to 125.6.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

• Apple (AAPL, Financial) 2.07%.
• Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) 1.71%.
• Caterpillar (CAT, Financial) 1.57%.
• DuPont (DD, Financial) 1.56%.
• JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) 1.56%.

In the broad market, energy and financial stocks led gains. Technology was also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector reporting a gain of 0.72%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,367.26 for a gain of 9.94 points or 0.73%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 832.86 for a gain of 6.71 points or 0.81%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,203.13 for a gain of 59.85 points or 0.73%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,510.24 for a gain of 84.12 points or 0.89%.
