US Market Indexes Lower on Thursday With Additional Geopolitical Risks

Dow Jones closes at 20453.25 with a loss of -0.97% for the week

U.S. market indexes were lower Thursday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20453.25 for a loss of -138.61 points or -0.67%. The S&P 500 closed at 2328.95 for a loss of -15.98 points or -0.68%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5805.15 for a loss of -31.01 points or -0.53%. The VIX Volatility Index continued to increase with the market’s losses. For the day, it ended at 15.96 for a gain of 1.20%. For the week, it reported a gain of 24.01%.

The market is closed tomorrow for Good Friday. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is down -0.97%. The S&P 500 reported a weekly loss of -1.12% and the Nasdaq reported a loss of -1.21%.

Thursday’s market movers

The U.S. bombed Afghanistan targeting ISIS, which increased geopolitical risks and influenced international commerce. Stocks traded lower following the news of the bombing and continued to trend lower in after-hours trading.

Banking companies reported good earnings results on Thursday with both JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) and Citigroup (C, Financial) beating earnings and revenue estimates.

Economic reports released on Thursday included the following:

  • Jobless claims decreased by 1,000 to 234,000.
  • The Producer Price Index decreased by -0.1% for the month.
  • The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index increased to 98 from 96.9.
  • Mortgage rates decreased. According to Freddie Mac, the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage average for the week was 4.08%, a decrease from 4.10%. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage average for the week was 3.34%, a decrease from 3.36%.

In the broad market, energy stocks led losses. Technology was also lower with the S&P 500 technology sector down -0.40%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1345.24 for a loss of -13.96 points or -1.03%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 815.62 for a loss of -9.61 points or -1.16%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8079.92 for a loss of -74.25 points or -0.91%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9405.82 for a loss of -112.27 points or -1.18%.
