U.S. market indexes were higher on Tuesday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20937.91 for a gain of 43.08 points or 0.21%. The S&P 500 closed at 2398.42 for a gain of 4.40 points or 0.18%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6138.71 for a gain of 5.09 points or 0.08%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 10.73 for a loss of -0.20 points or -1.83%.

Tuesday’s market movers

The White House released its budget proposal for 2018 and bank stocks led gains for the day. Economic reports released on Tuesday included the following:

  • The PMI Composite Index increased to 53.9 from 52.7.
  • New home sales were below estimates at 569,000 SAAR.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) 1.54%

Caterpillar (CAT, Financial) 1.35%

JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) 1.28%

In the broad market, financial stocks led gains. The S&P 500 financial sector gained 0.83% for the day. Technology was also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.11%.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8349.99 for a gain of 5.61 points or 0.07%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9444.24 for a gain of 35.02 points or 0.37%.
