U.S. market large-cap indexes were mostly lower on Thursday while technology stocks gained. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21611.78 for a loss of -28.97 points or -0.13%. The S&P 500 closed at 2473.45 for a loss of -0.38 points or -0.02%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6390.00 for a gain of 4.96 points or 0.08%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 9.58 for a loss of -0.21 points or -2.15%.

Thursday’s market movers

Technology stocks gained on Thursday while large-cap stocks traded mostly flat. Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Jobless claims decreased by 15,000 to 233,000.
  • The Leading Economic Indicators Index increased 0.6% for the month, which was above consensus of 0.4%.
  • Mortgage rates decreased for the week. Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey showed the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage at 3.96%, decreasing from 4.03%, and the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage at 3.23%, decreasing from 3.29%.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

Home Depot (HD, Financial) -4.09%

Travelers (TRV, Financial) -1.49%

General Electric (GE, Financial) -0.96%

American Express (AXP, Financial) -0.68%

In the broad market, materials stocks led losses. Technology stocks gained with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.21%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1442.35 for a gain of 0.58 points or 0.04%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 872.27 for a gain of 0.32 points or 0.04%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8732.68 for a loss of -2.52 points or -0.03%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9724.64 for a gain of 1.20 points or 0.01%.
