US Market Indexes Start the Week Higher

U.S. market indexes gained on Monday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21993.71 for a gain of 135.39 points or 0.62%. The S&P 500 closed at 2465.84 for a gain of 24.52 points or 1.00%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6340.23 for a gain of 83.68 points or 1.34%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.40 with a loss of -3.11 points or -20.05%.

Monday’s market movers

Global tension with North Korea eased on Monday, helping stocks to gain. No market moving economic reports were released on Monday.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Visa (V, Financial) 1.71%

Microsoft (MSFT, Financial) 1.49%

Verizon (VZ, Financial) 1.48%

Apple (AAPL, Financial) 1.47%

Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) 1.41%

In the broad market, real estate and technology led gains. The S&P 500 real estate sector gained 1.66% and the S&P 500 technology sector gained 1.59%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,394.31 for a gain of 20.08 points or 1.46%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 843.05 for a gain of 12.04 points or 1.45%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,468.50 for a gain of 102.54 points or 1.23%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,486.95 for a gain of 124.15 points or 1.33%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,730.91 for a gain of 19.86 points or 1.16%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,092.05 for a gain of 10.25 points or 0.95%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,456.34 for a gain of 15.01 points or 1.04%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,364.94 for a gain of 13.62 points or 1.01%; and the Dow Jones US Select Dividend Index at 657.99 for a gain of 4.55 points or 0.70%.
