US Market Indexes Gain on Monday

Dow Jones and Nasdaq close at new highs

U.S. market indexes were higher on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,792.20 for a gain of 140.46 points or 0.57%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,690.16 for a gain of 14.35 points or 0.54%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,994.76 for a gain of 58.18 points or 0.84%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 9.53 for a gain of 0.11 points or 1.17%.

Monday’s market movers

The Dow Jones and Nasdaq closed at new highs on Monday with the Dow Jones reporting its 70th record close for 2017, a new calendar year high. A positive outlook on tax reform helped stocks to gain.

The Housing Market Index was the only leading economic report released on Monday. The Index increased five points to 74.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Intel (INTC, Financial) 3.82%

Caterpillar (CAT, Financial) 2.10%

Apple (AAPL, Financial) 1.46%

Home Depot (HD, Financial) 1.18%

American Express (AXP, Financial) 1.18%

In the broad market, materials and consumer staples led gains. Technology was also higher with the S&P 500 Index gaining 0.88%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,548.92 for a gain of 18.50 points or 1.21%. The S&P 600 closed at 945.12 for a gain of 12.49 points or 1.34%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,460.57 for a gain of 117.67 points or 1.26%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,320.45 for a gain of 111.88 points or 1.10%

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,905.30 for a gain of 18.63 points or 0.99%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,192.22 for a gain of 5.54 points or 0.47%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,591.96 for a gain of 9.88 points or 0.62%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,490.06 for a gain of 8.55 points or 0.58%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 709.02 for a gain of 2.64 points or 0.37%.
