US Market Indexes Mixed on Friday, Higher for the Week

U.S. market indexes were mixed on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,219.38 for a gain of 19.01 points or 0.08%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,732.22 for a gain of 1.02 points or 0.04%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,239.47 for a loss of -16.96 points or -0.23%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 19.39 for a gain of 0.26 points or 1.36%.

For the week, the Dow Jones gained 4.24%, the S&P 500 gained 4.29% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 5.29%.

Friday’s market movers

The Dow Jones and S&P 500 reported their sixth consecutive day of gains while the Nasdaq Composite was lower on Friday. The utilities and health care sectors led gains for the day.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Housing starts increased to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.326 million.
  • Import prices increased 3.6% for the year and export prices increased 3.4%.
  • The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index increased to 99.9 from 95.7.
  • E-commerce retail sales reported a seasonally adjusted annual growth rate of 3.2% for the fourth quarter.
  • The Baker Hughes rig count decreased to 1,293 from 1,300.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,543.55 for a gain of 6.35 points or 0.41%. The S&P 600 Index closed at 942.05 for a gain of 4.14 points or 0.44%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,572.73 for a gain of 22.43 points or 0.23%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,042.19 for a gain of 52.93 points or 0.53%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,901.19 for a gain of 4.10 points or 0.22%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,208.88 for a gain of 0.44 points or 0.04%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,613.55 for a gain of 1.02 points or 0.06%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,512.36 for a gain of 0.53 points or 0.04%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 699.77 for a gain of 0.64 points or 0.09%.
