US Market Indexes Finish Higher on Tuesday

U.S. market indexes were higher on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,727.27 for a gain of 116.36 points or 0.47%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,716.94 for a gain of 4.02 points or 0.15%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,364.30 for a gain of 20.06 points or 0.27%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 18.20 for a loss of -0.82 points or -4.31%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Energy stocks led gains for the day. Investors traded with a positive outlook ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee’s rate announcement on Wednesday.

There were no major market moving reports on the economic calendar Tuesday other than the Federal Open Market Commitee's March monetary policy meeting, which began on Tuesday and ends on Wednesday with a press conference and release of new economic projections.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,570.41 for a loss of -0.16 points or -0.01%. The S&P 600 closed at 959.43 for a loss of -0.71 points or -0.07%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,766.16 for a gain of 19.49 points or 0.20%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,995.03 for a loss of -23.15 points or -0.23%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,918.74 for a gain of 1.17 points or 0.06%; the S&P 100 at 1,192.43 for a gain of 0.32 points or 0.03%; the Russell 3000 at 1,609.98 for a gain of 2.29 points or 0.14%; the Russell 1000 at 1,506.62 for a gain of 2.34 points or 0.16%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 685.38 for a loss of -1.04 points or -0.15%.
