US Market Indexes Continue Losses on Thursday

U.S. market indexes were lower Thursday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 23,957.89 for a loss of -724.42 points or -2.93%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,643.69 for a loss of -68.24 points or -2.52% The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,166.68 for a loss of -178.61 points or -2.43%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 23.34 for a gain of 5.48 points or 30.68%.

Thursday’s market movers

Stocks fell again on Thursday after reports from the Trump administration on new tariffs for China. The financial and industrial sectors led losses for the day.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Jobless claims increased by 3,000 to 229,000.
  • The FHFA House Price Index increased 0.8% for the month and 7.3% for the year.
  • The Composite Purchasing Managers' Index decreased to 54.3.
  • The Index of Leading Economic Indicators increased 0.6% for the month.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,596.37 for a loss of -226.49 points or -2.31%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,813.11 for a loss of -227.63 points or -2.27%.
