We are pleased to announce a new feature within My Portfolios: you can track your portfolio values and gains in the currency of your choice.

Background

We discussed two ways to compute portfolio gains in a previous article: while the “gain %” calculation only considers the first transaction price, the “dollar gain” considers all transactions, including commissions and dividends earned since purchase. You can view the formulas used to compute portfolio gain by clicking on the “What is this?” icon, as illustrated in Figure 1.

Reporting portfolio values and gains in a specific currency

If you click on “Customize this View,” you can add additional columns to the selected view. Alternatively, you can create a new portfolio view by clicking the “Add View” tab. You will see a list of financial calculations grouped by category, i.e., basic, portfolio and fundamental. As illustrated in Figure 2, the Portfolio category contains the following three items:

  • Value (Currency of Choice)
  • Gain (Currency of Choice)
  • Day’s Gain (Currency of Choice)

Once you add these columns to your portfolio view, you can track your portfolio values and gains in a specific currency using the drop-down menus illustrated in Figure 3.

Conclusions

You can add up to 500 stocks and exchange-traded funds to each portfolio. For example, your portfolio might contain Apple Inc. (AAPL, Financial), Next PLC (LSE:NXT, Financial), Total SA (TOT, Financial)(MIL:TOT, Financial) and SPDR S&P 500 ETF (ARCA:SPY, Financial).

Premium members can track their portfolio against the U.S. indexes and view the Peter Lynch charts for their stock holdings. Premium Plus members can view the Manual of Stocks for the companies in their portfolio.

You can also expand your data coverage by subscribing to additional regions like Canada, Asia and Europe.
