For the week, the Dow Jones gained 1.8%, the S&P 500 gained 2% and the Nasdaq Composite reported a return of 2.8%.
Thursday’s market movers
Stocks were lower Friday as global trade concerns overshadowed a positive start to the first quarter earnings season. JPMorgan (JPM, Financial), Citigroup (C, Financial) and Wells Fargo (WFC, Financial) all reported first-quarter earnings that beat estimates.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index decreased to 97.8 from 101.4.
- The Baker Hughes rig count decreased to 1,110 from 1,114.
