US Market Indexes Close Lower on Friday

U.S. market indexes were lower on Thursday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,360.14 for a loss of -122.91 points or -0.50%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,656.30 for a loss of -7.69 points or -0.29%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,106.65 for a loss of -33.60 points or -0.47%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 17.41 for a loss of -1.08 points or -5.84%.

For the week, the Dow Jones gained 1.8%, the S&P 500 gained 2% and the Nasdaq Composite reported a return of 2.8%.

Thursday’s market movers

Stocks were lower Friday as global trade concerns overshadowed a positive start to the first quarter earnings season. JPMorgan (JPM, Financial), Citigroup (C, Financial) and Wells Fargo (WFC, Financial) all reported first-quarter earnings that beat estimates.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index decreased to 97.8 from 101.4.
  • The Baker Hughes rig count decreased to 1,110 from 1,114.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,549.51 for a loss of -7.82 points or -0.50%. The S&P 600 closed at 952.77 for a loss of -3.75 points or -0.39%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,614.12 for a loss of -51.36 points or -0.53%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,881.22 for a loss of -34.30 points or -0.35%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,883.86 for a loss of -6.14 points or -0.32%; the S&P 100 at 1,167.50 for a loss of -3.29 points or -0.28%; the Russell 3000 at 1,574.59 for a loss of -5.10 points or -0.32%; the Russell 1000 at 1,472.42 for a loss of -4.55 points or -0.31%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 684.80 for a gain of 1.43 points or 0.21%.
