US Market Indexes Mostly Lower, Small Caps Continue to Gain

Russell 2000 closes at 1626.63 on Friday

U.S. market indexes were mostly lower Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,715.09 for a gain of 1.11 points or 0.01%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,712.97 for a loss of -7.16 points or -0.26%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7354.34 for a loss of -28.13 points or -0.38%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 13.42 for a loss of -0.01 points or -0.07%.

For the week, the Dow Jones was down -0.5%, the S&P 500 was down -0.5% and the Nasdaq Composite reported a loss of -0.7%.

Year to date, the Nasdaq Composite has a return of 7.17%, the S&P 500 has gained 2.34% and the Dow Jones is up 0.98%.

Friday’s market movers

Small-cap stocks continued their run while large-cap stocks were mostly lower on Friday. The Russell 2000 small-cap index reported its third consecutive record close. Large-cap indexes were lower as affects from rising Treasuries weighed on valuations. Trade talks with China also continued to cause market uncertainty. Sectors leading losses for the day included financials, energy, consumer staples and technology.

The Baker Hughes North American rig count report was the only major report on the economic calendar Friday. The rig count increased to 1,129. Looking ahead to Monday, the primary auctions for three-month and six-month Treasury bills are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. EST.

Small-cap stocks

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1626.63 for a gain of 1.34 points or 0.08%. The S&P 600 closed at 1002.57 for a gain of 1.55 points or 0.15%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10097.04 for a gain of 8.77 points or 0.09%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10265.09 for a loss of -16.19 points or -0.16%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1943.37 for a loss of -4.91 points or -0.25%; the S&P 100 at 1190.65 for a loss of -3.93 points or -0.33%; the Russell 3000 at 1613.48 for a loss of -3.33 points or -0.21%; the Russell 1000 at 1505.70 for a loss of -3.48 points or -0.23%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 693.52 for a loss of -2.03 points or -0.29%.
